Can I transfer funds to Australia before I move?

Yes, when you open a bank account with us we will send you all the information you need to be able to deposit into your new Australian bank account.

Is there a Minimum or Maximum amount of funds that must be in my Australian Bank account?

No, however we do ask that you make at least one deposit within 4 weeks of the account being opened.

Can I transact using my Australian Bank account before coming to Australia?

Unfortunately under Australian laws, you will not be able to withdraw funds you have deposited into your Australian Bank account before we have identified you. You will need to visit a Westpac Branch with your passport (current or expired within two years) within 6 weeks of your arrival to Australia. Once you have done that, we will then activate your account.

Will I earn interest on my funds?

Yes, you can apply for both an everyday transactional account (pays no interest) and a high interest savings account. Visit our website for more information on the types of accounts available to you.

Can I open a Foreign Currency Account?

Yes, you can open a Foreign Currency Account if you’d like to keep some funds in a foreign currency. Click HERE for more information.

Can I apply for a Westpac Credit Card before coming to Australia?

If you can prove you'll be earning $15,000 pa or more whilst in Australia, you may be eligible to apply for a credit card prior to your arrival. Proof of income could be an offer of employment in Australia, bank statements showing interest income, or you can apply if you have a balance greater than $300,000 in a Westpac account.*

You will also need to provide an Australian Address on your application form (this could be a trusted friend or family’s address or that of your Australian employer if they have agreed to receive mail on your behalf.

You can only apply for a credit card if you are arriving in Australia within 6 weeks of applying.

I don’t yet have employment in Australia, can I still apply for a credit card?
Yes*, if you have funds over AUD300,000 in a Westpac account you are still eligible to apply for a credit card providing you meet all other criteria.

If you still don’t meet the criteria, you can certainly apply as soon as you have gained employment in Australia. Please ask your branch for a migrant credit card application form. You will need to provide your passport and proof of income at the time of applying.

Can I apply for a Westpac Home Loan before coming to Australia?

You can apply for a home loan from overseas or soon after arrival in Australia if you are*:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident returning to Australia
  • a migrant on an employer sponsored visa (permanent or temporary - most subclasses)
  • a migrant on a Skilled - Permanent, or Skilled Independent or Skilled Independent Regional (Provisional) visa (most subclasses)
  • a non-resident but wishes to invest in properties in Australia and
  • you have ongoing income from employment, investments/rental properties, and/or other sources or
  • you are a Business Skill, Investor or Talent visa (most subclasses) migrant and
  • you either have or had a business in country of origin for at least 2 years or a business in Australia

Section 2 - Already in Australia

I’ve just arrived in Australia can I open a bank account?

Certainly, visit one our 700 branches to open an account. If you visit a branch within 6 weeks of arriving all you’ll need to take is your passport. Any later than this and you’ll need your passport and two supplementary forms of Identification.

Can I apply for a Westpac Credit Card?
